columbia’s hobbs rolls in the 100 fly

In a wide open field in the 100y Butterfly it was really anybody’s moment to seize.

But when defending champion, Princeton’s Monika Friedman had an inconsistent preliminary round and was relegated to Lane 8, a great opportunity was presented to the other seven competitors. A few of which were familiar faces from the final a year ago.

Enter Columbia’s Allison Hobbs.

Hobbs, who finished second to Friedman a year ago, looked in complete control during her preliminary race. Qualifying for the finals as the No. 1 seed, Hobbs outclassed the field with a 55.39 (dropping her time from a year ago by several tenths).

But she wasn’t done. In the finals, swimming out of Lane 4, Hobbs could see the entire field and gauge exactly what she needed to do. She could keep tabs on her nemesis from the year before. She could also keep a keen eye on the other two representatives from a year ago, Harvard’s Ali Slack and Yale’s Aidan McKinlay.

But the truth is, she didn’t have to keep tabs on them. They were too busy trying to catch up to her.

Hobbs held off the field with the race of her life. And the 54.92 that she dropped had Kari Klassen’s 1997 meet record in jeopardy for a good portion of the race.

Great race Allison!
