princeton thrashes meet mark in 400 medley relay

A year ago, the Princeton women’s 400 medley relay team put together a near perfect race to drop and impossibly fast 3:42.72 with a team loaded with current and former Ivy legends.

So when the final event of the night came up last night, and a couple of new faces marched to the Princeton starting block, there may have been a bit of a head scratching. The void left by Brett Shiflett in the freestyle leg due to graduation needed to be plugged. But the rest of that championship team — Justina DiFazio, Alicia Aemisegger, and Meredith Monroe — are on this year’s squad.

Aemisegger did return to the team this year, and was joined by fellow household name Courtney Kilkuts. And just as deep squads do, Princeton infused a bit of youth into the mix… opting for sophomore Megan Waters and and freshman phenom Jillian Altenburger to make a run at the record.

To smashing success.

In a relay that Princeton absolutely needed to win in order to chip into Harvard’s lead, the mixture of old and new worked to perfection.

The squad cut the mark down to 3:40.99 and Altenburger held off a hard-charging Hannah Galey (Columbia) at the end to secure the bonus points for first place. Shaping up our final scores for the first day.

Harvard leads the competition, but nothing is a foregone conclusion just yet.
